Using A Sand Wedge

One of the first things during sand play is to use a sand wedge. These wedges sometimes have a loft 50 to 58 degrees. Usually, they?ll produce a bounce of 8 or 12 degrees. Most players prefer a sand wedge of 58 degrees and a bounce of 8 degrees. Visualize a triangle in the sand to get a feel of where the line of target of the ball is from the angle of your foot. Position your wedge close to the ball and make sure to distribute your weight on your feet evenly. Imagine your swing and the target in your mind as you prepare to hit it. The primary point is to hit some of the sand behind the ball without giving in to resistance.

Working With The Club

It takes finesse and practice to work with your club during sand play. You have to plan your strategy accordingly and try not to kick up too much sand. The goal that most golf teachers and professionals suggest is that you move some of the sand with your hit. You want to hit the target, but don?t aim at just hitting the golf ball. Moving some of the sand along with the golf ball will make it easier for you to get out of the bunker and improve your sand play.

Bending The Wrists

When working in sand play, you?ll need to make sure your wrists are ready for the resistance that will occur. Because sand is dense, your wrists may bend slightly when you make your play. The problem with this is that the hit won?t be strong enough to send you out of the pit. Wrists should be held firm and don?t give into the sand when you make contact with it. In golf, it is important to keep the grip and body relaxed. When you are tense, this can make for unnecessary shots.

Practice Makes Perfect

Head over to a practice course or a driving range to improve your sand play. Purposely hit your ball into a sand pit and figure out how to get it out without using your hands. Swinging at it absentmindedly will do nothing but get sand everywhere. Use the methods you have been learning about and keep your putter at least two inches behind sand and the birdie.
